A Bankers Fantasy ---- Fantasía de Banqueros
During the gobernment of Lic. Gustavo Días Ordaz, the idea to create a tourist city in the middle of the jungle surget with the fundamental purpose to attract foreign currency. It seemed an utopia, to develop a tourist attraction in the territorio of Quintana Roo, the most distant and worst communicated of all the Mexican Republic, two thousand kilometers from MéxicoCity and without an international airport. The beaches were located nearly two hundred kilometers from the the nearest city in a practically uninhabited zone barely cross by dirt roads that winded between the swamps. The project lacked a colonization director plan: the inhabitants would have to migrate by their own will getting to the zone spontaneously. Where would the population that would live in this place come from? A remarkable hotel capacity was considered, that had not deposited any interest in the investors. The reality was that they did not know it, so that long line of hotels, the intense international airport traffic, the reservation sistem linked in a world level, the creation of thousand of jobs, and the attraction of mountains of foreign currency, existed only in the imagination of the creators of the project was that the authors were bankers and none had any experience in the tourist activity and on the others hand the opinion of the official organisms was not considered, so no future coul be seen for this utopia. The bankers insisted once and once again, until the president fell in love with the project transmitting it to the following administrations, today it is the second most important city in the peninisula. Cancún, in a little more than a decade became determinant in the tourist balance of the country, a population that surged from nothing, that grew in the mind of the planners, which was constructed in the space of the planner's desks and becoming a business of many million dollars. Today is the most important destiny of Mexico, that attracts the biggest number of foreign visitors and that every day opens new posibilities to increase the tourist affluence, with more flights and services available to the visitors.

Quintana Roo was without a double the furthest place from the republic's capital, because the first coastal settlement was Puerto Juarez, very small political sub – representation of Isla Mujeres with one hundred and seventeen inhabitants!! Since 1969 investors were looked for and it was until 1972 when some private bansk decided to build the first hotel of 280 rooms and 23 houses (now Hyatt Cancun Caribbean ), where infratur would provide the land in exchange of 19% of the shares afterward new constructions would come like the Hotel Playa Blanca, Camino Real, Hotel El Presidente and in the south end the building that Club Mediterranee would operate. Cancun is today the residence of a bigger number of Mexicans that come to it is city, the second in the Yucatan Peninsula. Until 1985, Cancun had 6 thousand rooms and 100 thousand inhabitants, a 16 to i relation,Fonatur calculated that this proportion could augment to 25 when 18 thousand room existed, which willgive a population of 450 thousand inhabitants (actually it is 600 thousand). En Castellano Durante el gobierno del Lic. Gustavo Días Ordaz, surgió la idea de fundar una ciudad turística e plena selva, con el propósito fundamental de captar divisas. Parecía una utopía, desarrollar un polo turístico en el territorio de Quintana Roo, el más alejado y peor comunicado con toda la República Mexicana, a 2,000 kilómetros de Ciudad de México; y sin un aeropuerto internacional. Las playas estaban ubicadas a casi 200 kilómetros de la ciudad más cercana, en un zona prácticamente deshabitada , apenas cruzada por brechas que serpenteaban entre los pantanos. El proyecto carecía de un plan rector de colonización: los pobladores habrían de serlo por voluntad propia, y llegarán a la zona en forma espontánea. ¿De dónde saldría la población que ocuparía este lugar? Se consideraba una notable capacidad hotelera, que no había depositado ningún interés a los inversionistas. La realidad era que aun no la conocían, de modo que esa larga fila de hoteles, el tráfico intenso en un aeropuerto internacional, el sistema de reservaciones enlazado a nivel mundial, la creación de miles de empleos y la captación de montañas de divisas, existía únicamente en la imaginación de los creadores del proyecto; lo que justificaba escepticismo en el proyecto era que los autores eran banqueros, y ninguno tenía experiencia alguna en la actividad turística y, por otro lado, la opinión de los organismos oficiales no estaba considerada, por lo que no se veía ningún futuro a esta “Utopía”. Los banqueros insistieron una y otra vez, hasta que el propio presidente terminó enamorado del proyecto, transmitiéndolos a las siguientes administraciones. Hoy día es la segunda ciudad más importante de la península. Cancún, en poco más de un década, se convirtió en factor determinante en la balanza turística del país, una población que surgió de la nada, que fue creciendo en la mente de los urbanistas, la cual fue construyéndose en el espacio de los restiradores y convirtiéndose en un negocio de muchos millones de dólares, es ahora el destino importante de México, que capta el mayor número de visitantes extranjeros, y que día a día abre nuevas posibilidades de aumentar la influencia turística, con más vuelos y servicios disponibles a los visitantes.
“En un Lejano Rincón de México”
Quintana Roo era, sin duda, el lugar más apartado de la capital del país, pues es el primer asentamiento costero era Puerto Juárez, una diminuta subdelegación política de Isla Mujeres con 117 habitantes ¡ loa alrededores eran zonas pobres y aldeas de pescadores como Puerto Morelos, Akumal, y Playa del Carmen, así como Cozumel, el cual era el único sitio en la región que mostraba actividad turística ya que contaba con pequeños hoteles. Cozumel fue uno de los sitios considerados para ubicar el desarrollo turístico del Caribe, pero esta posibilidad se vio enfrentada al problema del agua potable. Los estudios previos indicaron que los mantos freáticos eran insuficientes para cubrir las necesidades de un centro turístico de gran dimensión (envergadura), y la solución propuesta de traerla desde tierra firme era excesivamente costosa.
Desde 1969 se empezaron a buscar inversionistas y no hasta 1972 cuando varios bancos privados decidieron construir el primer hotel de 208 habitaciones y 23 casonas (ahora Hyatt Cancún Caribe), donde INFRATUR aportaría el terreno a cambio del 19% de las acciones; después vendrían nuevas construcciones como la del Hotel Playa Blanca, Camino Real, Hotel El Presidente y en el extremo sur el edificio que operaria Club Mediterráneo. Cancún es hoy residencia de un número cada vez mayor de mexicanos que vienen a poblar esta ciudad, la segunda de la península de Yucatán. Hasta 1985, Cancún tenía 6 mil cuartos y 100 mil habitantes, una relación de 16 a 1; FONATUR calculaba que esa proporción podría aumentar hasta 25 cuando existieron 16 mil cuartos, lo que daría una población de 450 mil habitantes (actualmente es de 300 mil) Lo interesante aquí es la increíble rapidez en los cambios sufridos en la fisonomía y organización de esta ciudad de Cancún. FONATUR pudo quedarse corto, pues Cancún se convirtió en el eje económico de la costa oriental de la península y eventualmente de todo el Caribe Mexicano. Cancún definitivamente ha aportado elementos importantes en el desarrollo del turismo en México, ha modificado la concepción de la ciudad turística, donde para optimizar el aprovechamiento de todos los atractivos naturales, mercados potenciales créditos, se ha requerido de especialistas y profesionales que den la mejor impresión y servicios que demandan los pasajeros que aun dentro de la gran competencia de destinos en el Caribe: Cancún , a pesar de ser primer desarrollo turístico planificado, y encontrar varias deficiencias, por la intensidad de su crecimiento, han ido resolviendo estas dificultades.
